mail and hosting on 2 different servers

We have a site set up for hosting only - say domain.com. DNS and mail is handled on another server. The website sends out email notifications to person@domain.com but because the web server thinks it's supposed to handle mail for domain.com the mail doesn't go out to the real mail server. Any ideas on how to force the mail to leave the server?

It's already set up that way. The webserver isn't going out to check the DNS record to see where the mail server is. It's just staying local.

Have you turned off the email on the webserver for that account?
