• Our team is looking to connect with folks who use email services provided by Plesk, or a premium service. If you'd like to be part of the discovery process and share your experiences, we invite you to complete this short screening survey. If your responses match the persona we are looking for, you'll receive a link to schedule a call at your convenience. We look forward to hearing from you!
  • The BIND DNS server has already been deprecated and removed from Plesk for Windows.
If a Plesk for Windows server is still using BIND, the upgrade to Plesk Obsidian 18.0.70 will be unavailable until the administrator switches the DNS server to Microsoft DNS. We strongly recommend transitioning to Microsoft DNS within the next 6 weeks, before the Plesk 18.0.70 release.
  • The Horde component is removed from Plesk Installer. We recommend switching to another webmail software supported in Plesk.

Question New to Plesk, having trouble updating files

GrassProgrammer

New Pleskian
Bought Windows hosting and domain name with HostGator.
For the hosting and management, they sent me to Plesk.

The domain name is still pending.

Within Plesk, I can visit the website using the IP address (since the domain name hasn't processed yet).

I see index.html, and have tried editing the contents of that file and saving it. However upon refreshing my browser window, the changes aren't reflected.

I also used FTP to copy some existing webpage files over. I can't reach them either (404, not found).

Nothing I try seems to change the publicly accessible site.

I'm sure I'm making a stupid mistake, but it's been a few hours now... I think I need help from someone to point it out to me.

Thank you for your time.

Hi IgorG,

Unfortunately I failed to find what I needed in the documentation.
  • On the video tutorials page, I watched the "Creating a Web Site" video, however my website already exists.
  • On the video tutorials page, I watched the "File Manager" video, however my files are already on the website.
  • Under "Documentation -> Getting Started with Managing Websites in Plesk -> Plesk Tutorial -> Step 1. Create Your First Website", it explains that you can create your website by just transferring the files over. I've done that via FTP, however I have been unable to make them load in a browser.
The default "index.html" is the only file that loads. I have tried editing index.html, but the changes are not reflected.
Any files I've uploaded via FTP aren't accessible either.

I don't know for sure, but I presume I'm looking for an update / restart / clear cache feature or something like that. I'm unsure.

To test whether my files work, what I'm doing is:
  1. Place the file in the same folder as index.html, which is the "httpdocs" folder.
  2. Go to the Plesk dashboard -> Websites & Domains, and copy the IP address shown there
    1. I can't use the domain name yet, as HostGator says the purchase is still pending. So I'm using the IP address for now.
  3. Paste the IP address into my browser. The "index.html" file loads (but the original file, not my edited copy of it)
  4. I edit the URL to go to my own custom files, such as http://[Server IP Address]/MyFile.aspx. According to the FTP transfer, this file should be in the same folder as index.html, so if http://[Server IP Address]/index.html works, then http://[Server IP Address]/MyFile.aspx should work as well. However it doesn't. This returns a 404, file not found.
I've spent hours on Google looking through forum results. I've read help documentation. I've tried clearing browser cache, trying a different browser, and trying a different computer. I believe the answer will be quite simple, but I have yet to find it. It just seems like no matter what I do, the changes to my files never show up in the browser.

If I understood you correctly, your domain is still not resolvable to the valid IP address, and you need to test your site by its IP address. The domain is already added to Plesk, but DNS is not configured?
So, if you want to use this domain by IP address, please go to Tools & Settings > IP Addresses > IP address and your domain name as Default site there.
After that, you will be able to access your site's content by IP address until domain provisioning.
