Plesk 8.1.0 Installation Failure - Weird VPS Behavior

I am currently using 7.5.4 and I have just set up a new virtual server and tried to install 8.1.0 as I am looking to migrate to the most recent version of Plesk.

The virtual server is a cleanly installed copy of CentOS 4.3 (default not minimal). Prior to starting the VPS I issued the following commands on the physical server:

I then start the VPS, entered it and downloaded the plesk auto installer (psa_installer_v3.1.0_build061201.02_os_CentOS_4.3_i386), ran it and when it gets to starting the qmail daemon -- it fails without any specific error. I have tried this multiple times on multiple VPS's.

The other thing I find strange is that if I simply try "service mysqld start" to start the mysql-server daemon, that fails as well. Starting and stopping httpd and sshd work fine though.

The network seems to be working well, and the user_beancounters seems fine with no fails.

I have searched all over the web looking for a solution to this and have been unable to find one. Any help that you would be able to offer with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
