Tweaking mysql and apache configuration

I have some problems on my 256mb RAM VPS, so im thinking to give a try on some tweaking practices i found on web for mysql, and apache configurations. Is it safe for plesk to change those configurations?

According the apache one, i noticed that i can not change the main configuration because plesk overwrites it all the time, so wich is the best way to change server-based variables such as MaxRequestsPerChild, should i make an include file ? if yes, where is the best place to include it ?

Does that also happens for mysql configuration or im free to change it ?
