• Our team is looking to connect with folks who use email services provided by Plesk, or a premium service. If you'd like to be part of the discovery process and share your experiences, we invite you to complete this short screening survey. If your responses match the persona we are looking for, you'll receive a link to schedule a call at your convenience. We look forward to hearing from you!
  • The BIND DNS server has already been deprecated and removed from Plesk for Windows.
If a Plesk for Windows server is still using BIND, the upgrade to Plesk Obsidian 18.0.70 will be unavailable until the administrator switches the DNS server to Microsoft DNS. We strongly recommend transitioning to Microsoft DNS within the next 6 weeks, before the Plesk 18.0.70 release.
  • The Horde component is removed from Plesk Installer. We recommend switching to another webmail software supported in Plesk.

Backup files from w2003 can´t be deployed on a w2008 server

We are having problems using the Migration Manager/PMM for 8.4 as it simply won´t migrate certain domains - we have tried almost all...

The latest idea was to just copy the useraccount (no problem in that) then run a backup on the server that we migrate from of the domain with problems, then create the domain on the new (w2008) server - upload the domains backup file from the 'old' server and then try to restore the backup...

Unfortunately this brilliant idea failed with the following error:

" Error: The file C:\Program Files\Parallels\Plesk\Backup\/xxxx.com/xxxx is not a valid Plesk domain backup file"

We are really tired of the non-functional Plesk Migration Manager for 8.4 as it has tons of errors.

Anybody outthere that has had similar problems and might have idea to solve these problems?

Any idea would be highly appreciated and we will naturally share any result - positive or negative with You all..

I've been trying to migrate 2 win2k3 x86 servers to 2 win2k8 x64 servers without any luck at all. My brilliant idea was to, as you thought, use the stupid migration manager, it failed miserably messing up the win2k8 machine and I had to reformat.
Then, my other brilliant idea... Oh, yes. Create the users, create the clients, create the domains, then use the wonderful Backup Utility in Plesk that seems so simple... Then do the opposit on the Win2k8 machine, just simply upload the file...
Well, I don't get the error that I have an invalid archive/file... All I get is application errors, error 404.11 or something like that that means that I have a string too long for IIS 7 to manage or something like that.
I've all but given up on Plesk and I'm about ready to purchase another hosting package.

If you get anywhere on yours, can you email me? Please? I've all but burned up my drives from reformatting an reinstalling the OS. I can do it with my eyes closed now. :)

I really wish Parallels would come out with a, well, what most users and companies would have out even before they publish new software, what is called a 'Cheat Sheet'. Something that shows how the Win2k8 setup should be configured, what components to and not to load, etc.

I've been running Plesk on Win2k3 systems for years. My wonderful idea of going to a quad quad core x64 machines has all but given me a back ache and a sort but.
And losts and losts of waisted time away from the family dogs :))

Hi,

Thanks for sharing Your experiences...

Just like You I´m sure that many other will experience these and more errors as migration from 2003->2008 servers really start....

Parallels has been investigating this error for most of 3 weeks now and hasn´t really cume up with a useful solution yet and some of our questions they simply choose to leave unanswered for some reason - even in their own ticket system - maybe because they know that these are indeed bugs in their version that alledgely should support w2008 completely.

Unfortunately it seems that they haven´t tested Plesk 8.4 for w2008 with the newest FTP7 ftp server from Microsoft and therefore there are major inconsistencies in making this work as well - pity because the new FTP7 (separate download from MS) is actually great with FTP over SSL support and many other features..

Firewall in Plesk 8.4 for w2008 doesn´t read all the rules in the windows firewall giving major headaches as You can only see a few of the rules in the Plesk interface

...And many more problems...

We will share solutions here as we go along but this is really a rough ride, guys....

Your very welcome! I'm so surprised that so few people are migrating to win2k8.
Windows Server 2008 has been out for quite some time now and most servers are shipping with it.
It almost seems as if Parallels doens't even have a Win2k8 setup. If they did, they'd realize that this product, Plesk CP, has too many required 'workarounds' to function in a Win2k8 enviroment to release to the public; yet alone 'Push' it on their web sites saying that its Win2k8 ready! Gosh!
About the new FTP7 with Win2k8, I read somewhere that this shouldn't be installed because of problems with the mail client 'Hord' in Plesk. Is this true or not?
Oh, the Firewall interface of Plesk <> Win2k8. I think this might be the root of all these evils. From what it looks like, Plesk doens't know half of the blocked ports/programs that Win2k8 is blocking. Taking on the same 'Security Strict Theme' as Vista, Win2k8 can control the functioning of just about any data flowing in or out, including the execution of programs. If Plesk doens't know how to talk to this Win2k8 Firewall module, its like two people of two different languages trying to talk, no communications, and Win2k8 doens't know how to play sharades :)

About hanging in for a rough ride... I'm going to try as long as I can. I just hope Parallels realizes what this does for their consumer base.

FTP7 is a great product and should in all cases be installed instead of the outdated FTP6 that ships with the w2008 packet - there are some workarounds needed when using with Plesk as they have several topic of misinterpretation that is surely based in missing tests by Parallels - I suspect them for having just tested FTP6 for w2008...

When Horde installs with Plesk on w2008 it doesn´t make a correct installation as it gives wrong permissions on some config files causing it to not resolve properly - it has got nothing to do with FTP7 as far as I can judge...

There also seems to be some inconsistencies with MSSQL, MSSQL Express and Plesk in a w2008 installation that can cause serious config problems and also therefore with the migration from other w2003 servers to a w2008 server.
