How do I configure DNS settings?

Hello;

The "DNS zone template" page for my Plesk 8.1 version has the following record types: NS, MX, PTR, A, and CNAME.

I have set the NS settings to custom nameserver settings like this:
ns1.mydomain.com
ns2.mydomain.com

However, my domain name register won't accept the new nameservers.

I created the new nameservers yesterday afternoon. Does anybody know if there is a propagation period before the new nameservers come into effect?

Is there an article somewhere that tells how to properly configure the above settings?

I would appreciate any help.
