How to limit number of mysql processes

I'm having persistent problems with running over the "numfile" limit in my VPS (its set to 2100) - MySQL likes to eat about 1600 of these, and its a lightly loaded site.

I have tried various mysql options, reducing table_cache, max_connections etc, but cannot find the basic option to reduce the number of mysqld processes. This would at least place a limit on the open files. Right now there are 17 mysqld processes just waiting, keeping files open.

The limit of 2100 is way too low in my opinion.

I tend to agree!

I have now set the "flush" variable to 120, which means that every 120 seconds the files get closed (load is not too high so this is OK) but still the limit can get exceeded.

I have also requested an increase in the limit.

If I can't get this, how do I reduce the number of processes started by MySQL? It seems to start up with about 12 processes running by default, even before it has been accessed.
