  • The BIND DNS server has already been deprecated and removed from Plesk for Windows.
If a Plesk for Windows server is still using BIND, the upgrade to Plesk Obsidian 18.0.70 will be unavailable until the administrator switches the DNS server to Microsoft DNS. We strongly recommend transitioning to Microsoft DNS within the next 6 weeks, before the Plesk 18.0.70 release.

Hello

I am really new at this. I have no idea how to setup hosting and what all I need...
Currently I have a Windows 2003 Server Standard Editiong with Plesk 8.1 running on it. I own a domain name as well. Do I need to purchase anything else?

How do I set this up...I don't get what to put for dns, nameservers, "full hostname" (initial setup for plesk).

Sorry, I'm really new at this. If anyone knows any good tutorial sites that explain all this, please let me know
Thank you!

Ok, let's try it ;-)

Well, first of all,

Where did you register your domain-name (company)?
There your domain name settings are stored.
There you can simply set up an entry that directs all requests to the fixed IP your Plesk-Server has.
And also add an PTR-Record or you might have trouble sending mail to certain mail-servers out there...

Let's assume your domain is mydomain.com and your fixed ip is 80.80.80.2.

Then you enter in the setup-dialogue of plesk as FullyQualifiedDomainName:
mydomain.com.
Plesk will then ask you which IP you want to use, you will see you 80.80.80.2 IP and add it to the shared pool.

That's it for the setup of plesk.

Then you can add a user for plesk, after that you can add a domain to the user (mydomain.com) and set all features you want to have.

Just keep in mind that the changes to the DNS you did for your domain at the registrar can take some hours to get effective on the whole net...

After those Settings are active, you can access plesk via
https://mydomain.com:8443

Well, this was a really quick overview for you how to start.
I tried not to mention too many special words here to keep it simple and compact for you
:D

Hello

Thanks a lot for your kind reply!

Okay my domain company just allows me to change the nameservers of my server, so I have to enter something like "ns1...." and it isn't allowing me to enter my server IP address there.

Okay so for the full hostname I've entered mysite.com

I've added the IP to the pool and I added the client/domain. Withing the domain names DNS settings, it made these DNS records:

208.xx.xx.xxx / 24 PTR mydomain.com.
blog.mydomain.com. A 208.xx.xx.xxx
ftp.mydomain.com. CNAME mydomain.com.
mail.mydomain.com. A 208.xx.xx.xxx
mssql.mydomain.com. A 208.xx.xx.xxx
ns.mydomain.com. A 208.xx.xx.xxx
photo.mydomain.com. A 208.xx.xx.xxx
sitebuilder.mydomain.com. A 208.xx.xx.xxx
mydomain.com. NS ns.mydomain.com.
mydomain.com. A 208.xx.xx.xxx
mydomain.com. MX (10) mail.mydomain.com.
webmail.mydomain.com. A 208.xx.xx.xxx
www.mydomain.com. CNAME mydomain.com.

The domain has PHYSICAL hosting on 208.xx.xx.xxx

So for my nameservers in the site, would I just say "ns.mydomain.com" and then make another one in plesk with "ns1.mydomain.com" and add that as secondary? Let me know.

Really appreciate your kind help!!!!

Thanks

Hello!

Well congrats that you made it this far already :)

The next steps depend on the TLD of your domain.
If it is .com I think it might be enough
to create a new DNS-Entry on your server called ns2.domain.com as A entry pointing to your IP.

Then you can go to your registrar and enter ns.domain.com and ns2.domain.com as nameservers.

If you've got for example a .de-domain than this is not that easy as they force you to have the two nameservers in two completely different class c-subnets...

So I hope for you that it's .com-domain to keep this all easy and straight forward :D

Good luck!

Okay I have a domain with fxdomains and it is a .com domain! In my Plesk DNS settings I made ns1.mydomain.com and the ns.mydomain.com was already there.

So I went to my domain registrar...put "ns1.mydomain.com" and ns.mydomain.com but it is showing me an error

"Errors were detected." That's all it says. Do I have to register nameservers or something anywhere?

Thanks

Well, that again depends on the registrar...

In our system we have to create a new nameserver first and can then select the nameservers from a list in our system.

So please have a look in your webinterface at your registrar if you have to create/register the nameservers first.

You can also check if the nameservers are working by using the Command Prompt in Windows and enter there:
nslookup www.mydomain.com ns.mydomain.com
and
nslookup www.mydomain.com ns1.mydomain.com

That should work...
If not, check your firewall-settings if port 53 is open...

Good Luck! ;)
