Permission Error

Ok, so I have a problem, I recently installed some CMS and it changed the root permission of my plesk. I was locked out of everything. I got permission denied on everything. So when I realized it changed the permissions, I changed everything to 777, well it worked except I can not access FTP or change anything in plesk, my permissions are now set at 755 for security measures, but still nothing works. My host said I should format and restart using the little option under the server setting. Well first I wanted to see if there was any other way. If not I have a few questions:

1.) How do I make a backup using tar?
2.) How can I fully backup my MYSQL.
3.) What are any other suggestions you have?

Go to http://autoinstall.plesk.com/PSA_8.2.1/dist-rpm-RedHat-el4-i386/base/ and download all the core RPMs to a directory. Then change to that directory and re-install them.

rpm -Uvh --force *.rpm

This will fix your plesk installation with out loosing any data. Additionally you can do into the contrib and opt directories and re-isntall any additional packages you may need.
