Problem with .htaccess and mod_rewrite

I have the following .htaccess file in the root directory of one of my subdomains (/httpdocs):

Options +Indexes
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^/logo /index.php?section=login

I am receiving the following error from Apache:

/httpdocs/.htaccess: Illegal option RewriteEngine

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks!

Tim

Maybe, I've done a bit of this, but within the vhost.conf include on a domain.

Try

Options +Indexes
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^/logo /index.php?section=login
</IfModule>

Thanks for the reply...

I know how to do this within vhost.conf or any of the other main Apache config files. It's very important that I be able to control this from within .htaccess. I know it can be done.
