  • The BIND DNS server has already been deprecated and removed from Plesk for Windows.
If a Plesk for Windows server is still using BIND, the upgrade to Plesk Obsidian 18.0.70 will be unavailable until the administrator switches the DNS server to Microsoft DNS. We strongly recommend transitioning to Microsoft DNS within the next 6 weeks, before the Plesk 18.0.70 release.
  • The Horde component is removed from Plesk Installer. We recommend switching to another webmail software supported in Plesk.

Question about OS upgrade

AnkeWZL

New Pleskian
Hello,

I am currently running Plesk 11.09 on OpenSuse 11.4. I would like to upgrade the OS to OpenSuse 12.2, and AFAIK I will then need a new version of plesk 11.09 built for suse 12.2.
I have created a server backup of the current plesk config/vhosts/mail using the plesk backup manager.

I can upgrade the OS via zypper, but Im not clear how to upgrade plesk itself to work for the new OS. If I understand correctly, upgrading the OS will break my current version of plesk.

I only have 1 server and cant do a migration to a new server, so I have to upgrade the existing server.

Could someone please briefly explain the process?

Can I restore from the backup mentioned above to a fresh plesk 11.09/suse 12.2 even though backup was created with an older version (plesk 11.09/suse 11.4) ?

I tried to find this info in the knowledgebase, read about the migration process between 2 servers, but am still unclear on the proper upgrade path especially as I only have 1 server.
According to other articles, an "in place" upgrade is not possible since the OS is already too old.

Perhaps I am overlooking the obvious but I wanted to be clear on correct upgrade procedure before I make an attempt.

thanks in advance for any help.

We have only this official recommendation - http://kb.parallels.com/115819
All other methods you can use only on your own risk.

Hello, thanks I had read that. It says to upgrade via migration & transfer manager.

However, in the panel documentation it says under "upgrading by transfer":
Upgrading Through Backup Files

In addition to using Migration & Transfer Manager, you can back up data on a source server, transfer the resulting archive file to the destination server, and restore the data there. Backing up and restoring can be performed through the Panel user interface or by means of command-line utilities pleskbackup and pleskrestore.

can I make a backup with plesk backup manager on existing Plesk 11.09/Suse Linux 11.4 and then restore to a NEW clean install of Plesk 11.09/Suse Linux 12.2 on the SAME server? Will this successfully transfer all the server data and settings?

I cant do a migration because I only have 1 server. But I can restore from a backup, if this procedure will work.
