  • The BIND DNS server has already been deprecated and removed from Plesk for Windows.
If a Plesk for Windows server is still using BIND, the upgrade to Plesk Obsidian 18.0.70 will be unavailable until the administrator switches the DNS server to Microsoft DNS. We strongly recommend transitioning to Microsoft DNS within the next 6 weeks, before the Plesk 18.0.70 release.
  • The Horde component is removed from Plesk Installer. We recommend switching to another webmail software supported in Plesk.

Upgrade from 7.5 to 8.2

I'm currently running RHEL3 and Plesk 7.5.4. I'd like to upgrade to RHEL 5 and Please 8.2. My original plan was to build up another server and migrate the clients over one at a time but I just read that backup and restores can only take place on the same version of Plesk. So what are my options? If I upgrade my license key to an 8.2 license how long will my 7.4.5 system continue to run with its existing key?

Options:

1. Install Plesk 8.2 on new RHEL5 server. Upgrade existing RHEL3/Plesk7.4.5 server to Plesk 8.2. Backup on old server, restore on new. What kind of problems am I going to run into here? I don't like this as my only backup plan would be a full restore of the 7.5.4 system since I have to upgrade it.

2. Install RHEL3/Plesk 7.5.4 on new server. Backup domains on original server, restore on new server. Once all the domains are restored to new server upgrade it to 8.2. If all goes well I can build up the original server with RHEL5/8.2 and migrate the domains again (again).

Any other options? It seems that as soon as I upgrade my license key (which is necessary to use more than on client/domain) I'm committed to 8.2.

I would recommend you try the built in migration tool in pesk 8.2
I have used it in the past to migrate data to a new 8.1 machine with no problems.

Hey dourtyb,

Yeah, I'm in the exact scenario and my plan is to use the Migration tools built into Plesk to migrate the data. I've used them from 6.0 to 7.5 and they worked fine.

The only problem being that during the migration I'll need a bunch of temporary IP addresses on the new server until the migration is complete at which time I can run the reconfigurator.pl script (which better still exist in 8.2).

Best Regards,

Anyone have any idea how long the license on my 7.5.4 server will function after I upgrade it to work for the 8.2 server. I'd like to take the migration process slow and easy and do a domain at a time and make sure all is well with each as I go. I figure it will be several days worth of work. I really don't want to upgrade the license and start the migration only to have my 7.5.4 server stop working due to licensing.

Thanks,

Brian

Hey,

Historically, I've just gotten a temporary 30-day licence key for the new server from SW-Soft. After I'm done the migration, I shut the old server down, then re-install my licence key. I was planning to do the same thing this time.

Best Regards,
Matt Simpson
