Issue Wordpress auto-update leaves maintenance mode on

Something started happening maybe a month ago: Wordpress auto update seems to leave the .maintenance files in place.
I have to manually delete the files so that the wordpress sites are visible again. Otherwise it displays "Sorry, this site is down for maintenance.."
Any ideas what to do?
